Lamtluang Online News: On Friday night (29 November 2024), based on information received from the duty personnel of Bairabi Chhim Veng Branch YMA, a deer was found dead on the bank of Tlawng river at Kheva shore near Bairabi.
From three Chakma individuals, the staff of Bairabi Forest Range recovered a deer carcass, which had marks of gunshot wounds and was found hidden.
The three individuals, Prodip Chakma (40), Prodip Poddo Chakma (36), and Geno Prodip Chakma, residents of Bhaichorra, Hailaiandi District, Assam, were accused of poaching the deer.
They were produced before the 1st Class Magistrate at Kolasib District Court yesterday, and a criminal complaint was filed against them.
As per the Magistrate's order, the three individuals were sent to Kolasib District Jail.
The deer carcass was disposed of with the permission of the Magistrate by burying it in a deep pit after pouring diesel.
The deer is a protected species under the Wildlife Protection Act Schedule, and those found guilty of poaching it can be imprisoned for up to 3-7 years and fined at least Rs 25,000.
