MIZORAM TO INTRODUCE PREPAID METERS FOR ELECTRICITY CONSUMERS

Lamtluang Online News, Aizawl, December 11, 2024: Mizoram's Power and Electricity Minister, Pu F. Rodingliana, has announced that prepaid meters will be introduced throughout the state to enable consumers to pay for their electricity usage in advance.

The minister stated that the prepaid metering system will allow consumers to top up their accounts with a minimum amount of ₹100. He added that the system will bring transparency to the payment process, enabling consumers to pay the correct amount for their electricity usage.

Pu F. Rodingliana said that the government has planned to install 2,89,000 smart meters for consumers, 2,300 DT meters, and 398 feeder meters. He added that a total of 2,92,081 meters will be installed throughout Mizoram, enabling the government to monitor electricity usage accurately.

The minister stated that the smart metering system will eliminate the need for manual meter reading, reducing the likelihood of errors and manipulation. He added that the government will follow the guidelines set by the central government regarding smart meter tariffs.

Pu F. Rodingliana also announced plans to replace old cables with new ones throughout Aizawl city under the RDSS scheme and the Smart City project. He expressed hope that this will help reduce power outages in the city.
