LUNGLEI DISTRICT ATS CRACKS DOWN ON TOBACCO VIOLATIONS

Lamtluang Online News, 9 November 2024: This morning, the Lunglei District Anti-Tobacco Squad (ATS) conducted a raid under Section 4 of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) Act, 2003 [COTPA 2003] in Lunglei Sobji Bazar and its surrounding areas, confiscating tobacco products.

Eleven individuals were found violating the law and were fined under Section 21(1) of COTPA. The total fine amount collected was ₹ 1,050.

As per Section 4 of COTPA 2003, smoking is prohibited in public places and areas frequented by the public, including:

- Auditoriums
- Hospitals
- Railway stations
- Public transportation
- Restaurants
- Government offices
- Courts
- Educational institutions
- Libraries
- Public vehicles
- Other areas where the public gathers.

Violating this section by smoking in public places can result in a fine of up to ₹200 under Section 21(1) of COTPA.

The Lunglei District ATS regularly monitors compliance with COTPA 2003 and takes action.
