TRAGEDY IN FARKAWN: COMMUNITY LEFT REELING AFTER SENSELESS ATTACK

Lamtluang Online News: On 30 October 2024, Pu Sangkima, a 45-year-old resident of Farkawn, was brutally attacked by four Burmese men, resulting in his tragic death. He succumbed to his injuries on 24 December 2024 at 6:30 am while undergoing treatment at Zoram Medical College (ZMC) Hospital.

The attack, which occurred near Chawngtui peng, was unprovoked. Pu Sangkima suffered severe injuries to various parts of his body. After the assault, the attackers callously left him lying in the road, unable to move on his own. Fortunately, some passers-by came to his aid, providing him with initial care before transporting him to Farkawn.

Due to the severity of his injuries, Pu Sangkima was referred to Champhai Hospital and later transferred to Zoram Medical College (ZMC) Hospital on 2 November 2024. At ZMC Hospital, he underwent surgery for internal bleeding. Although he underwent another surgery on 7 November 2024, and his bleeding had stopped by 9 November 2024, he remained unconscious and was put on a ventilator. Unfortunately, he passed away on 24 December 2024.

The perpetrators of Pu Sangkima's murder are Taithawm Lal from Bungzung, and Cheu Lian Hum and Sum Lian from Tlauhmun. All are Burmese nationals who had come to visit their relatives in Vaphai. Taithawm Lal has been arrested by the police and is currently detained at Champhai District Jail, while the other two are being pursued in Burma.

In a tragic irony, Farkawn village, where Pu Sangkima resided, had been hosting over 300 Burmese refugees, showing kindness and generosity to those in need. However, the very same community that had welcomed them with open arms was repaid with violence and tragedy.

Pu Sangkima was a Muster Roll employee in the Power & Electricity Department and the sole breadwinner of his family. He is survived by his ailing wife, who requires constant care, and their two daughters. The elder daughter is in her teens.

The incident has sent shockwaves throughout the community, leaving many to wonder who will now provide for Pu Sangkima's family. The senseless act of violence highlights the need for greater vigilance and cooperation between law enforcement agencies to prevent such incidents in the future.

TLAWNG HYDEL PROJECT TO GENERATE 120 MW OF POWER

Lamtluang Online News: The Tlawng Hydel Project, which aims to generate 120 megawatts of power, involves the construction of a dam on the Tlawng river in North Lungleng. The project is expected to play a crucial role in meeting the power demands of the region.

According to Minister Pu F. Rodingliana, the project will have a water storage capacity of 1,009.6 million cubic metres, and the water used for power generation will be released back into the Tlawng river, helping to maintain a stable water flow.

The Ministry of Water Resources, Government of India, sanctioned Rs 11.55 crore in 2014 for the survey and investigation and preparation of the detailed project report (DPR) of the Tlawng HEP, which will be implemented by the Central Water Commission (CWC).

The CWC has already completed topographical surveys, geotechnical investigations, seismic studies, and construction material surveys. The foundation study for the dam site is currently underway, and the drifting work to investigate the presence of underground caves is being carried out.

The tender for the work has already been floated, and the tender evaluation process is currently underway. It is expected that the work will be completed within about four months if it progresses smoothly.

Once the drifting work is completed, the exact location and quantity of the dam's foundation will be determined. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) is expected to be completed by around 2025.

Once the DPR is completed, the Mizoram government will take immediate action to implement the project. The project is also expected to alleviate the water scarcity problems faced by Aizawl city during the dry season, as the Tlawng river will provide a reliable source of water.

The project will also generate employment opportunities for the local population and contribute to the overall economic development of the region. The dam will submerge an area of 2888 hectares of uncultivable land and 187 hectares of cultivable land.

The project is expected to be completed within the stipulated timeframe, and the Mizoram government is committed to ensuring that the project is implemented in a transparent and accountable manner.

The press conference was chaired by Pi K. Lalrinzuali, IAS, Secretary, Power & Electricity Department, and was also attended by Er. Lalnithanga, Chief Engineer, Er. C. Lalropianga, Chief Engineer, Er. JH Malsawma, Chief Engineer, Er. DELAY IN MGNREGS WAGE PAYMENTS: MIZORAM GOVERNMENT ISSUES CLARIFICATION

Lamtluang Online News: The Rural Development Department of the Government of Mizoram has issued a clarification regarding the delay in wage payments to workers under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS).

The delay in wage payments has been caused by technical issues faced by the Pay and Accounts Office, which is responsible for releasing the funds.

The Central Government had released the funds for wage payments on 5 December, but the technical issues have caused the delay.

The Rural Development Department has assured that the state government is making all efforts to resolve the issue and release the payments as soon as possible.

The department has appealed to the workers to be patient and has assured that the payments will be made before Christmas.
