SURITA CHAKMA'S ALLEGATION REFUTED: CHAKMA PATIENTS BIGGEST BENEFICIARIES OF POOR PATIENTS' FUND - SDH TLABUNG

LAMTLUANG ONLINE NEWS, 3 NOVEMBER 2026: Sub-District Hospital, Tlabung has issued an official statement refuting the allegation made by Surita Chakma on social media that Chakma patients are not prioritised for medical care at Tlabung Hospital. The hospital authorities have termed the allegation untrue and asserted that there is no discrimination based on ethnicity or religion at the hospital.

In its statement, the hospital said that there has never been any discrimination at Tlabung Hospital on grounds of ethnicity, community or religion. It stated that all patients are provided proper and equal treatment with respect and care, in accordance with their medical condition and clinical necessity.

The hospital clarified that the Hospital Poor Patients' Fund is operated to meet the needs of underprivileged patients. The fund is largely contributed by the Mizo community and is intended for all those in need, without discrimination on the basis of ethnicity or religion. The authorities noted that the majority of beneficiaries of this fund are Chakma patients.

The hospital also disclosed details of receipts and expenditure under the Poor Patients' Fund from 2024 to date. Of the total funds received, amounting to Rs 3,15,494, Rs 3,06,964 (97.29%) was contributed by the Mizo community and Rs 8,530 (2.70%) by the Chakma community.

With regard to expenditure, Rs 80,218 (26.81%) was spent on Mizo patients, Rs 2,10,088 (70.21%) on Chakma patients, and Rs 8,903 (2.97%) on Bru patients. The hospital said these figures demonstrate that the Poor Patients' Fund is utilised for those in need, without ethnic discrimination.

The statement further noted that discrimination on the basis of ethnicity and community is most unfortunate, and defamation of this nature without sufficient evidence is even more regrettable. It warned that false accusations could lead to misunderstanding and serious mistrust among communities that have lived together peacefully for a long time.

The authorities reiterated that Sub-District Hospital, Tlabung is a hospital for all people and that patient care is a vital service rendered by its staff. Patients are always treated with compassion, respect and kindness, without any preferential treatment based on ethnicity or religion, the statement added.

Lamtluang Online News, 30 July 2026: According to an official notification issued by the Government of Mizoram, K Lalrinzuali, IAS, who is currently serving as Secretary of the Power & Electricity (P&E) and Health & Family Welfare (H&FW) Departments, has been appointed as a Member of the Mizoram Public Service Commission (MPSC).

She will retire from her post as Secretary under the Government of Mizoram on 31 July 2026.

Before assuming office as an MPSC Member, she will be required to take the prescribed oath of office and secrecy. At present, the MPSC has only one Member besides the Chairman. Following her induction, the Commission will have two Members in addition to the Chairman.

LAMTLUANG ONLINE NEWS, AIZAWL, JULY 24: Lalbuatsaiha, son of Zosiama from Keifang, has created history by becoming the first visually impaired Mizo to earn a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree.

He successfully defended his PhD thesis on Friday, 24 July, at the Centre for South Asian Studies, School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi. His doctoral research, titled India's Policy Towards Bhutan, 1998–2013, examines India's diplomatic engagement with Bhutan during the 15 year period.

Lalbuatsaiha has consistently achieved significant academic milestones. He previously became the first visually impaired Mizo to obtain both a Master's degree and an MPhil degree. He also qualified the UGC National Eligibility Test (NET) in Political Science and was awarded the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) in International Relations, the discipline in which he pursued his doctoral studies.

He is currently serving as an Assistant Professor at Government J. Thankima College, Bawngkawn,  Aizawl and resides at Zemabawk, Aizawl.

His achievement marks a historic milestone for the Mizo community and serves as an inspiring example of determination, perseverance and academic excellence in overcoming barriers to higher education.

ASSAM RESIDENT ARRESTED WITH 99 GRAMS OF HEROIN IN CHAMPHAI

Lamtluang Online News, lChamphai, 10 June 2026: At around 10:30 a.m. today, officials of the Excise & Narcotics Enforcement Department seized 99 grams (8 soap cases) of heroin near the Seventh-day Adventist motor workshop at Zotlang, Champhai, Mizoram.

A motor car bearing registration number MZ 01/L-0335, which was allegedly used for transporting the contraband, was also seized. In connection with the case, Ikbal Hussain (28), son of Fakar Uddin, a resident of Karimganj, Assam, was arrested on the spot.

A case has been registered against him under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, and further investigation is underway.

Renowned Mizo songwriter V Thangzama (91), husband of Vanlalengi of Dawrpui Vengthar, Aizawl, passed away at Aizawl Hospital at 11:30 PM on May 14, 2026. Besides being a gifted songwriter, V Thangzama was among the first Mizos to enter the Assam Civil Service. Later, he joined the Mizoram Civil Service and retired from government service in January 1994. He composed 44 songs and also translated 17 songs. He was also an Elder of Dawrpui Vengthar Presbyterian Church. His funeral will be held at 12 noon on May 15, 2026.

ONE YEAR OLD BOY FATALLY RUN OVER IN BILKHAWTHLIR, MIZORAM

Lamtluang Online News: At around 1.45 pm on 28 February 2026 (Saturday), KC Lalruattluanga, aged 1 year and 10 months, son of KC Laltanpuia of Dawrveng, Bilkhawthlir, Mizoram was fatally run over by a vehicle.

According to eyewitness accounts, a resident of Bilkhawthlir Dawrveng, who is the husband of the child’s aunt, was reversing an Ecco van from a driveway when the vehicle accidentally struck and ran over the young boy.

KC Lalruattluanga sustained severe injuries and was immediately rushed for medical treatment. However, he succumbed to his injuries at 1.46 pm.

The funeral will be held at 12 noon on 1 March 2026.

WOMAN DIES AFTER VEHICLE LEAVES ROAD NEAR KEIFANG IN MIZORAM

Lamtluang Online News | At about 8 pm on the night of 27 February 2026, near Keifang Dai on Champhai Road in Mizoram, around 7 km from Keifang, vehicle number MZ 04 0405 left the road and went towards the hillside. Of the four people travelling in the vehicle, Lalrinawmi, 43, wife of Lalthanzawna from Mualkawi, died at the scene. She was reported to have had no visible external injuries.

The vehicle was carrying four occupants: Lalrinawmi’s three year old daughter Zorintluangi, her mother Pi Denghnuni, and Lalchhanhima, who was driving at the time. The other three individuals are understood to have escaped without serious injuries.

Lalrinawmi’s three children, two sons and a daughter, were attending the KTP General Conference in Saitual when the accident occurred. Her eldest son stated that he was unaware that his mother had travelled.

The body has been taken to the Saitual Sub Headquarters YMA Hall, and arrangements are being made for the post mortem examination.

LUNGLEI CONFIRMED AS HEADQUARTERS OF MIZORAM STATE UNIVERSITY AFTER ASSEMBLY APPROVAL

Lamtluang Online News,, 25 February 2026: The Mizoram Legislative Assembly has passed the Mizoram State University (Amendment) Bill, 2026, formally confirming that the headquarters of Mizoram State University will be located in Lunglei.

The Bill was introduced in the House by Dr Vanlalthlana, Minister for Higher and Technical Education. Following detailed deliberations, the House approved the amendment.

While presenting the Bill, the Minister recalled that the original Mizoram State University Bill, 2025 had been passed by the Mizoram Legislative Assembly on 4 March 2025. Subsequent steps were initiated to operationalise the university, including the creation of posts and the issuance of advertisements to recruit essential staff. Preparations were also underway to renovate the Geology and Mining Department office at Luangmual in Aizawl to serve as the proposed headquarters.

However, representations were received from various quarters, including Lunglei, Champhai and Mamit, both before and after the passage of the original Act. Following discussions with non governmental organisations and local MLAs, the Council of Ministers reviewed the matter on 17 November 2025. After careful consideration, it resolved that the headquarters should be located in Lunglei in order to address regional imbalance and promote equitable development.

The Chief Minister subsequently announced on 20 November 2025 that the headquarters of Mizoram State University would be established in Lunglei.

Given the need for further scrutiny of certain provisions, a new drafting committee was constituted to review the existing Act. After obtaining approval from the Council of Ministers, the amended Bill was placed before the House during the current session.

The Minister stated that the primary objective behind the amendment was to correct regional imbalance. He further informed the House that three sections of the Act have been amended under the new Bill.

More than 20 members participated in the discussion and expressed their views before the Bill was passed.

MAIMIZIAL BY RAYMOND COLNEY CLAIMS TOP HONOUR AT MIZO SHORT FILM COMPETITION 2026 IN AIZAWL

Lamtluang Online News: Raymond Colney’s short film Maimizial has secured first prize at the Mizo Short Film Competition 2026, with the award ceremony held in Aizawl on 24 February 2026.

The event took place at the Mini Theatre, Lianchhiari Run, Directorate of Information and Public Relations, Treasury Square, Aizawl. It was organised by the Directorate of Information and Public Relations in collaboration with the Mizoram Film Development Committee. A total of 41 short films were submitted for this year’s competition.

The prizes were presented by Pu B Lalchhanzova, Minister for Information and Public Relations and Printing and Stationery. The programme was chaired by Director Pi K Vanlalsangi, while Secretary Pi Betsy Zothanpari Sailo delivered a brief report on the competition.

In his address, the Minister stated that a good film is a powerful medium capable of shaping the thoughts of its audience and guiding them towards what is right. He emphasised that producing a large number of films is less important than ensuring quality. He also announced that, with support from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the Lemchan Mizo Film Festival is scheduled to be held in Mizoram from 16 to 18 March.

The Minister further noted that filmmakers who receive recognition and awards tend to approach each subsequent project with deeper meaning and careful planning, highlighting the importance of using time wisely. He congratulated all the award recipients and expressed hope that those who did not win would remain encouraged and continue striving for excellence.

For the competition, 41 short films with a duration of 10 to 15 minutes were submitted by the closing date of 16 February 2026. Following careful evaluation by the panel of judges, the results were officially announced at the ceremony. The first prize carried a cash award of Rs 2,50,000, the second prize Rs 1,25,000 and the third prize Rs 70,000. Five consolation prizes of Rs 30,000 each were also presented.

FIRST-EVER LAPAROSCOPIC SURGERY FOR PANCREATIC CANCER PERFORMED IN MIZORAM

Lamtluang Online News, February 24, 2026: A Gastroenterology training programme and Surgical Workshop was held today (February 24, 2026) at Zoram Medical College and Hospital, Falkawn, Mizoram. The workshop was jointly organised by the Department of Surgery, ZMC&H, and the Association of Surgeons of Mizoram. During the programme, Mizoram witnessed its first-ever laparoscopic surgery for pancreatic cancer.

As part of the Gastroenterology training, visiting doctors from Manipal Hospital, Salt Lake performed procedures related to pancreatic cancer. In collaboration with Dr Benjamine Khiangte, Medical Gastroenterologist (Gastro & Liver Clinic), Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) procedures were provided free of cost to eight selected patients in need.

Notably, this marked the first time that EUS has been conducted in a government hospital in Mizoram. Doctors of ZMC&H highlighted the importance of the EUS equipment, stating that many patients are currently referred outside the state for such procedures. They expressed hope that once the facility becomes fully available in government hospitals, it will significantly reduce the difficulties faced by patients seeking advanced treatment.

The programme was attended by Prof Zoramthara Zadeng, Director; Prof Lalnunmawii Sailo, Medical Superintendent; and Prof C. Vanlalhlua, Sub-Dean (Hospital), who also extended gratitude to the visiting team from Manipal Hospital. It was further stated that under MUHCS, patients can avail themselves of medical services free of charge.

The workshop concluded in the evening with a Continuing Medical Education (CME) seminar. Discussions focused on advancements in Gastroenterology and the future prospects for Mizoram. The session was chaired by Dr Samuel Lalhruaizela, Associate Professor. Prof John Lalliandinga, Head of the Department of Surgery, ZMCH, delivered the vote of thanks. Surgeons from across Mizoram and doctors from ZMCH attended the programme.
