MIZORAM CHIEF MINISTER LAUNCHES BOOK ON TREE INVENTORY AND CARBON STORAGE

Lamtluang Online News: The Chief Minister of Mizoram, Pu Lalduhoma, launched a book titled "Tree Inventory & Carbon Storage of Assam Rifle Campus, Aizawl, Mizoram" published by the Centre for Environment & Social Justice (CESJ) on 7 December 2024.

The Chief Minister emphasised the importance of sustainable development, stating that the world now considers it a top priority. He added that development works should be done in a way that minimises harm to the environment and land.

"We want development, but since development activities also harm the environment, we need to pay the price for development, which we are well aware of," he said.

Regarding the relocation of Assam Rifles, the Chief Minister mentioned that a joint survey is currently being conducted, and the land will be carefully protected.

A study was conducted on the 16.9 hectares of Assam Rifles land, where 480 different tree species, 80 species, 31 families, and 59 genera were identified. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, four critically endangered species, one endangered species, and five vulnerable species were found.

Out of the total species identified, 71 are medicinal plants and edible plants. The study also found that the area absorbs around 5766.73 metric tons of carbon dioxide.

The area where Assam Rifles is located has been beautifully transformed into a park, thanks to the efforts of the Bethlehem Branch YMA, which initiated the project in 2008 under the name "Aizawl Chuap" (Chuap means lung).

Pi Vanramchhuangi, Working Chairman of CESJ, emphasised the importance of environmental protection, stating that it is the top priority for CESJ. "We want development to be done in a way that minimises harm to the environment, and we want to work while following environmental protection laws," she said.

The book launch ceremony was chaired by Pi Saizampuii Sailo, Treasurer of CESJ, and Rev. LH Rawse delivered the invocation.
