Lamtluang Online New, September 25, 2025 : Baptist English School, the largest school in Lunglei, has declared a two-day holiday in response to a widespread seasonal flu outbreak affecting a large number of pupils.
School authorities announced the decision after consulting parents and guardians, stating that the school had been “severely affected” by the current flu wave. According to the statement, many pupils have been falling ill continuously since the beginning of the season, with symptoms lasting for more than a week.
On Monday, 325 pupils were absent, rising to 445 on Tuesday. Yesterday, absences reached 528, with several teachers also unable to attend due to illness.
With attendance dropping sharply, class tests could not be held, and the scheduled Neltas examination has been postponed. Regular lessons were also disrupted.
Medical professionals visited the school to assess the situation, after which the administration decided to close the school on 25 and 26 September (Thursday and Friday). Authorities stated that further closures could follow if the situation does not improve. Parents have been urged not to send children to school if they are unwell.
